About the event
Join Unity Books to celebrate the launch of Perverse Verse by Michael Gould.
About the book
Perverse Verse’s short iconoclastic poems offer humorous (often black) and reflective observations on life in our contemporary screwed-up world. Award-winning writer, Michael Gould (a Canadian transplant), is someone well outside mainstream poetry in Aotearoa New Zealand today. The poems, both published and new, will appeal especially to the baby boomer generation, though those of generations since who are lovers of wordplay and the hip general and literate reader will also find pleasures here.
About Michael
Poet and film scholar, born in Toronto, graduated from York University (Canada) with a degree in Fine Arts (Film) and is the author of one of the first English language books on the subject of surrealism and film — Surrealism and the Cinema: Open-eyed Screening(1976). He has made films, programmed films, conducted interviews with veteran filmmakers and written occasional pieces on film in both Canada and Aotearoa New Zealand. He was awarded a Canada Council grant for writing on film.
His poems have appeared in publications, both academic and popular, in Canada, the United States, England, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2021 he was awarded by the New Zealand Society of Authors as an “emerging poet” — at the age of 71. He lives in Wellington.
