The story of modern dance is a story of subversion - of forms challenged and hierarchies toppled in the pursuit of blazing artistic integrity. In Wild Grace, Sara Veale profiles nine of the pioneering women at the heart of this movement, from Isadora Duncan and Loie Fuller's fearless rejection of nineteenth-century paternalism to Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus's battles to recentre marginalised histories in the wake of the Second World War.

Each of these dancers redefined the meaning of grace in their art and their lifestyle, conveying vital truths about what it means to walk the world as a woman. Veale brings to life the stories and artistry of these remarkable individuals and reveals how, in their refusal to conform, we can find urgent lessons for today.",{"_813":829,"_815":1012,"_789":1092},"Scholarly & Professional",{"_813":829,"_815":841,"_789":1094},"Faber & Faber, Incorporated",{"_813":829,"_815":820,"_789":1096},"Trade Paper",{"_813":829,"_815":845,"_789":1098},"Paperback",{"_813":829,"_815":848,"_789":1100},"English",{"_813":829,"_815":1019,"_789":1102},"DANCE; CONTEMPORARY DANCE; FEMINISM & FEMINIST THEORY",{"_813":829,"_815":851,"_789":1104},"2027-01-26",{"_813":829,"_815":854,"_789":1106},"288",{"_813":829,"_815":823,"_789":1108},"Faber & Faber Classical Music & Dance",{"_813":857,"_815":350,"_789":858},{"_813":857,"_815":731,"_789":858},{"_813":857,"_815":1112,"_789":863},"onorder_auckland",{"_813":857,"_815":860,"_789":863},{"_813":857,"_815":862,"_789":863},{"_813":857,"_815":1116,"_789":1117},"last_received_auckland","03/11/2026",{"_813":857,"_815":865,"_789":1117},{"_813":857,"_815":1120,"_789":1121},"price_auckland","30.0",{"_813":857,"_815":868,"_789":1121},{"_813":857,"_815":1124,"_789":1125},"stock_auckland","3",{"_813":857,"_815":870,"_789":1127},"2",{"_813":873,"_815":874,"_789":875},{"_813":873,"_815":350,"_789":875},{"_813":873,"_815":731,"_789":875},{"_813":873,"_815":878,"_789":747},{"_813":873,"_815":1133,"_789":747},"codes_auckland",{"_813":873,"_815":880,"_789":747},{"_813":873,"_815":882,"_789":883},{"_813":873,"_815":1137,"_789":883},"sub_auckland",{"_813":873,"_815":885,"_789":883},{"_813":873,"_815":887,"_789":888},{"_813":873,"_815":1141,"_789":888},"main_auckland",{"_813":873,"_815":890,"_789":888},{"_813":873,"_815":892,"_789":893},{"_813":873,"_815":895,"_789":893},{"_813":873,"_815":897,"_789":1045},{"_813":873,"_815":1147,"_789":1045},"department_auckland",{"_813":873,"_815":900,"_789":1045},{"_766":1150},[1151],{"_769":116,"_770":-5,"_130":1152,"_209":1153,"_780":1157,"_786":1158,"_17":1160,"_790":1161,"_792":1162},"gid://shopify/ProductVariant/46616585699525",{"_773":1154,"_775":779,"_130":1155,"_35":1069,"_778":1156},"Wild Grace Cover Image","gid://shopify/ProductImage/43351068770501",1330,{"_782":783,"_784":1121},[1159],{"_751":752,"_789":1160},"Wild Grace : The Untamed Women of Modern Dance","9780571368570",{"_794":1163},[1164,1167],{"_797":1165},{"_799":116,"_133":1166},{"_751":347},{"_797":1168},{"_799":116,"_133":1169},{"_751":729},{"_130":1171,"_17":1172,"_742":1173,"_761":1174,"_810":1176,"_764":1225},"gid://shopify/Product/8882387058885","That Still Moment","that-still-moment",{"_35":1175},"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0625/6679/3413/files/978-1-64423-137-1.jpg?v=1781136868",[1177,1178,1180,1181,-5,1183,1185,1186,-5,1188,1190,1192,1193,1195,1196,1197,-5,1198,1200,1202,-5,-5,1204,-5,1205,1206,-5,1207,-5,1209,-5,1211,1212,-5,1213,1214,-5,1215,1216,-5,1217,1218,-5,1219,1220,-5,1221,1222,-5,1224],{"_813":814,"_815":17,"_789":1172},{"_813":814,"_815":817,"_789":1179},"DENBY EDWIN",{"_813":814,"_815":820,"_789":1075},{"_813":814,"_815":823,"_789":1182},"DAVIZW",{"_813":814,"_815":826,"_789":1184},"BREP",{"_813":829,"_815":830,"_789":831},{"_813":829,"_815":17,"_789":1187},"That Still Moment: Poetry and Essays on Dance",{"_813":829,"_815":817,"_789":1189},"Edwin Denby; Cal Revely-Calder (Introduction by)",{"_813":829,"_815":839,"_789":1191},"

The newest volume in the beloved ekphrasis series focuses on dance and poetry through the eyes of one of the twentieth century's greatest critics

\"I am interested at the moment in recalling to you how it looks when one sees dancing as non-professionals do, in the way you yourselves I suppose look at pictures, at buildings, at political history or at landscapes or at strangers you pass on the street. Or as you read poetry.\" --Edwin Denby

After starting his career as a dancer with companies and troupes in Germany and Switzerland, Edwin Denby moved to Manhattan, where he formed friendships with prominent members of the New York School, including Frank O'Hara and John Ashbery, and artists such as Rudy Burckhardt. In his critical writing, he brought his experience as a dancer to the page along with a poet's sensibility, distinguishing himself as an authority through delicate observation and illustrative prose. This collection of writings highlights Denby's interdisciplinary scope and range of expression, as well as his sharp, singular voice and empirical sensibility toward all works of art.

This Still Moment pairs Denby's landmark essays on dance criticism and portraits of major performers, such as Vaslav Nijinsky, with selections of his poetry. The writer and editor Cal Revely-Calder further contextualizes Denby's life and work in his insightful introduction.
